Bergen Community College To Offer Classes

Posted on August 10, 2010

Bergen Community College is offering the Fire Protection HHS (High Rise and Hazardous Occupancy) program this fall on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  Persons who already have completed the Fire Protection ICS program may enroll to continue their education and elevate their licensing in Uniform Construction Code enforcement.  The HHS program is 60 hours and covers large area occupancies and construction features such as atriums, malls, underground buildings along with strong emphasis on the storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials.

Persons who have not attended the Fire Protection ICS class are encouraged to consider advancing into the field of Uniform Construction Code enforcement and if enough interest is found the course will also be offered this Fall (September 2010) to run on Monday and Wednesday evenings.  This course is not shown in the catalog but it will still be offered and prospective students can contact the instructor listed below for more information.  Fire Protection ICS (Industrial Commercial Specialist) is a 120 hour program based on the enforcement of the NJ Uniform Construction Code relating to fire protection systems and building construction.  This is the first step in the licensing process that will allow you to enforce the construction code in a municipal agency.

The fall semester continuing education catalog is available on the Bergen Community Website or by clicking the link below to download it as a PDF.  The Construction Code – Fire Protection classes start on page 70 of the catalog.

Safety Officers

Posted on June 6, 2010

The Interboro Mutual Aid Group is about to embark on the use of IMAG Safety Officers to improve and enhance fireground safety.  Anyone wishing to serve as a IMAG Safety Officer should have their fire chief submit their name along with evidence of completing the Incident Safety Officer course and the Building Construction course or equivalents to Joe Desena of Northvale.

Safety Officers will respond on second alarms and greater and perform Safety Officer functions on the fireground as needed.  They will be under the command of the Incident Commander or Incident Safety Officer in accordance with NJAC regulations and consistent with established Interboro procedures (which can be found in the file vault on this web site).
