The 96th Annual Convention took place on Friday evening June 5th at Little Ferry Hook and Ladder Company # 1.  Valor awards were presented to two firefighters from Hackensack for saving a life in a residential fire.  A Presidential Life Saving Award was given to a nursing student who aided the driver of a tractor trailer who was severly burned when his gasoline tanker overturned on the ramp of Exit 16W of the New Jersey Turnpike.  A Citizens Award was given to a family who had practiced fire drills in the home.  This practice turned into a living nightmare when the family was awakened to the sound of their smoke alarm.  The mother and father led their children from the house as they had practiced numerous times before.  All occupants, including the 17 year old son who has autism, were saved.  Frank Gluckler of the Hillsdale FD was given the Rudy Appeld Service Award.  Three firefighters from Leonia FD were given a Unit Citation. 

The NJ and NY VFA also presented 10 scholarships during the convention.
